In 2023 TIME reported that Kenyan workers cleaning up toxic text for ChatGPT took home between $1.32 and $2 an hour. In 2026, you can get paid to train AI from Lagos or Accra at $40, $80, even $100 an hour, if you know which door to knock on and which ones are locked to your passport.
I have spent more than 15 years reading African CVs, and I have never seen a remote market change this fast. The pay can be very good. It is also unstable, full of country restrictions nobody explains upfront, and copied by scammers. This guide covers all of it.

What does AI training work actually involve?
AI companies build a model, then pay humans to tell it when it is wrong. That correction step is called RLHF (reinforcement learning from human feedback) or, more loosely, data annotation. Typical tasks:
- Ranking two chatbot answers. The model gives two replies to "How do I register a business name with CAC?" You pick the better one and explain why in a few sentences.
- Writing a problem the model gets wrong. A maths graduate writes a hard probability question, solves it, and checks whether the AI fails. Outlier describes this exact work on its homepage: difficult prompts with correct answers, "designed to expose AI errors".
- Checking code. A developer reads AI-written Python, runs it, and flags the bug.
- Rating a translation. A Yoruba speaker scores whether a model's Yoruba sounds like a person from Ogbomoso or like a confused textbook.
None of it requires you to know how AI works. It requires you to be right and careful.
Why AI labs now pay African experts and bilingual speakers
First, what models still get wrong is expert reasoning: a tricky contract clause, a drug interaction, a tax rule. Labs pay for people who can spot those mistakes, and a Nigerian lawyer or Kenyan doctor is as qualified to do that as anyone in Ohio.
Second, models are weak in African languages. OpenTrain has posted an annotation project for native speakers of 54 African languages and dialects, including Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, Swahili, Amharic and Zulu. Mercor listed an $80 an hour role for language experts that included Swahili and Egyptian Arabic (that listing has since closed). The money follows the gaps.
The money is serious. Outlier says it has paid experts over $500M, and a Deel case study says micro1 onboards more than 100 experts a day.
What do AI training jobs in Africa pay? Tiers and realistic ranges
Pay depends mostly on what you know. Here is what real 2026 listings show.
- Basic labelling. What you do: Score image quality, draw boxes, extract data from documents; Typical pay range (from live listings): $5 to $16/hr; some projects pay per item, e.g. $0.29 per sample; Who it suits: Students, anyone building a first track record
- Generalist evaluation. What you do: Rank chatbot answers, rate everyday writing, write prompts; Typical pay range (from live listings): About $15 to $50/hr; Who it suits: Strong English writers with good judgement
- Language work. What you do: Rate or rewrite AI output in Yoruba, Hausa, Swahili, Arabic, Zulu; Typical pay range (from live listings): $6 to $65/hr on Meridial listings; $25 to $40/hr starting on DataAnnotation's multilingual track; Who it suits: Native speakers who also write well in English
- Specialist / expert. What you do: Check reasoning in law, medicine, finance, STEM; Typical pay range (from live listings): $40 to $125+/hr; Mindrift says $60 to $100+ for domain experts; Who it suits: Professionals with degrees and real practice
- Coding. What you do: Review, debug and write code for model training; Typical pay range (from live listings): $15 to $40/hr at the low end on OpenTrain; up to $150+/hr on DataAnnotation; Who it suits: Working developers
Two warnings. "Up to" means very few people get the top number. And Meridial's Swahili posting says pay depends on experience and location, which is polite for "Nairobi may get less than New York".
AI training jobs for experts: where the real money sits
If you are a pharmacist, an accountant or a litigator, stop applying to generalist projects. Appen's CrowdGen advertises maximums up to $160/hr for accounting and $450/hr for medicine. Those are ceilings, not averages, but they show what labs value. Say you're a pharmacist in Ibadan: a generalist rating project might pay $15 an hour, while a clinical reasoning review pays several times that at the same desk.
Which platforms accept applicants from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa and Egypt?
Most guides get this wrong. Several big names exclude whole African countries, and the lists change. I checked each official page in October 2026.
- Outlier. Nigeria: No; Kenya: No; Ghana: No; South Africa: Yes; Egypt: Yes; How you get paid: Weekly; PayPal, Airtm or ACH reported
- Mercor. Nigeria: Yes; Kenya: No; Ghana: Yes; South Africa: Yes; Egypt: Yes; How you get paid: Weekly via Stripe to your bank
- DataAnnotation. Nigeria: Unclear; Kenya: Unclear; Ghana: Unclear; South Africa: Unclear; Egypt: Unclear; How you get paid: PayPal only
- Remotasks (Scale AI). Nigeria: Cut off 2024; Kenya: Cut off 2024; Ghana: Not confirmed; South Africa: Not confirmed; Egypt: Not confirmed; How you get paid: PayPal or Airtm
- Mindrift (Toloka). Nigeria: Reported yes; Kenya: Check; Ghana: Check; South Africa: Check; Egypt: Check; How you get paid: Twice monthly, Payoneer or PayPal reported
- CrowdGen (Appen). Nigeria: Reported yes; Kenya: Not listed; Ghana: Not listed; South Africa: Not listed; Egypt: Not listed; How you get paid: Bank, PayPal, Payoneer, Airtm
- Outlier. Its Flexible Working Guidelines, effective 15 July 2026, list South Africa and Egypt but not Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana or Rwanda. It also bans VPNs used to hide your location. We break down the Nigerian situation in Is Outlier AI legit in Nigeria?.
- Mercor. Its supported-countries page lists Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Egypt and Rwanda. Kenya is on the unsupported list, and Mercor states it cannot onboard experts or issue contracts there.
- DataAnnotation. It publishes no country list. A third-party comparison says it accepts only the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand; I could not confirm that officially.
- Remotasks. Rest of World reported it shut down entirely in Kenya, Nigeria and Pakistan in early 2024.
- Mindrift and CrowdGen. Fintech Raenest reports both accept Nigerians. Neither publishes a full country list on its main pages, so "not listed" means apply and see.
- Also worth a look: Alignerr (listed roles $25 to $120 an hour, paid weekly), micro1 (pays through Deel) and OpenTrain, a free job aggregator where eligibility is set per posting.
If you are in Kenya, read that list twice: Outlier, Mercor and Remotasks are all closed to you. Our guide to AI training jobs in Kenya focuses on what is still open. Nigerians have more options, covered in AI training jobs in Nigeria.
Where Tamborin AI fits. We built Tamborin AI for these gaps. It is open to people in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Egypt and Rwanda, pays $20 to $100 an hour with no minimum hours, and pays every Friday. Projects include everyday writing evaluation at $32/hr (open to all), Swahili, Yoruba and Arabic rating at $45/hr, financial analysis checks at $80/hr, and code review for model outputs at $100/hr. You do not need prior AI experience. See open Tamborin AI projects.
How do assessments work, and how do you pass them?
Almost every platform tests you first:
- DataAnnotation gives you one Starter Assessment, and you can take it only once. Most take about an hour; specialised ones run one to two hours.
- Mindrift reviews your CV, may invite you to a short assessment, then verifies your identity through Persona. It states plainly that the assessment is unpaid.
- Outlier requires a valid ID and mobile number from your country of residence.
Unpaid testing is normal. Paying to be tested is not.
How to pass, from what I have seen work:
- Read the guidelines twice. Most people fail on instructions, not knowledge.
- Write your reasoning like a lawyer. "Response B is better" scores nothing. "Response B correctly applies the 2020 CAMA rule; A cites the repealed 1990 Act" scores well.
- Do not paste answers from ChatGPT. You are being tested on your own judgement, and AI-written answers are exactly what these review teams exist to catch.
- Fix your setup first. A NEPA cut halfway through a timed test is a fail. See our guide to handling power cuts and data caps at home.
How does the money reach you?
Check the payout route before you spend a weekend on an assessment.
- PayPal. DataAnnotation pays only through PayPal. For years Nigerian PayPal accounts could only send money. PayPal began allowing Nigerians to receive funds through a partnership with Paga in January 2026, but early users report it is patchy, so test a small payment before you rely on it.
- Stripe. Mercor pays every Wednesday through Stripe Connect to a bank account in your own name. The first Stripe payout carries a 7-day hold, and contractors outside the US receive local currency, not dollars.
- Payoneer and Airtm. CrowdGen lists bank transfer, PayPal, Payoneer and Airtm.
- Deel. micro1 pays its experts through Deel.
Whatever the platform, a USD account like Grey or Wise lets you hold dollars and convert when the rate suits you. We compare fees in Wise vs Payoneer vs mobile money.
The honest risks of RLHF jobs and AI trainer remote jobs
Nobody owes you the next task. Know the risks before you build rent around it.
Projects end without warning. A project can be "paused" on Tuesday and never return. Outlier's own guidelines note that customers may restrict projects to certain states, regions or countries.
Whole countries get cut off. Kenyan Remotasks workers lost access on 7 March 2024, according to Rest of World. Scale AI blamed "operational errors" for the lack of notice.
Deactivations. Accounts get flagged for quality, a location mismatch or a VPN, and there is no guarantee an appeal succeeds. Never log in through a VPN to reach a platform your country is excluded from.
Scams. Mindrift warns about people contacting workers through unofficial channels while claiming to be Mindrift. It says you should never be asked for a fee, deposit or purchase at any stage, and CrowdGen says the same. Any request for money ends the conversation.
The darker side. TIME's January 2023 investigation found that Sama, an outsourcing firm, paid Kenyan workers roughly $1.32 to $2 an hour to label graphic text, including descriptions of child sexual abuse, for OpenAI. Sama ended the work early, in 2022. If a project asks you to review disturbing content, you are entitled to know that before you accept, and to say no.

FAQ
Can I get paid to train AI from Nigeria?
Yes. Mercor lists Nigeria as supported and pays by Stripe to a Nigerian bank account. CrowdGen and Mindrift also take Nigerian contributors, and Tamborin AI is open to Nigerians with weekly Friday pay. Outlier is not available to new Nigerian workers under its July 2026 guidelines, and Remotasks closed Nigeria in 2024.
Is Outlier available in Kenya?
No. Outlier's Flexible Working Guidelines, effective 15 July 2026, do not list Kenya, Nigeria or Ghana. They do list South Africa, Egypt and Tanzania. Outlier also bans VPNs used to hide your real location, so working around the restriction risks a ban and lost earnings.
How much do AI training jobs pay per hour?
It depends on skill. Basic labelling can pay $5 to $16 an hour, generalist evaluation roughly $15 to $50, and expert or coding work $40 to $150 or more on some platforms. Language work for African languages ranges widely, from $6 to $65 an hour on recent listings.
Do I need a degree or AI experience?
Not for generalist or language work. You need strong written English, good judgement and patience with detailed instructions. Expert projects in law, medicine, finance or STEM usually want a relevant degree and real practice. No platform expects you to understand machine learning before you start.
Are AI training jobs a scam?
The major platforms are legitimate and pay real money, but scams copy their names. A real platform never charges you to join, sell you an account, or ask for a deposit. Apply only on official websites, and treat WhatsApp or Telegram "recruiters" asking for fees as fraud.
How do I receive payment in Africa?
It varies by platform: Stripe bank transfer (Mercor), PayPal (DataAnnotation), Payoneer or Airtm (CrowdGen), or Deel (micro1). Check that the payout method works in your country before you take any assessment, because routes like PayPal in Nigeria (receiving only opened in January 2026) are still unreliable.
Your next step: open Tamborin AI, pick the project that matches your strongest skill, and take its assessment this week, with your power and data sorted first.
