Kenya helped build modern AI, yet two of the best-known AI training platforms will not let a Nairobi resident sign up today. If you want AI training jobs in Kenya in 2026, first learn which doors are shut, so you stop wasting weekends on applications that will never clear onboarding.
After 15 years in recruitment, I see Kenyan applicants lose hours to platforms that quietly exclude the country. Every platform below was checked in October 2026.

Why Kenya became a hub for data annotation jobs
CloudFactory was hiring and training data workers in Kenya by 2015, citing high English comprehension (press release). A 2021 KEPSA survey cited by Al Jazeera counted at least 1.2 million Kenyans working online. The history has a hard side too:
- Sama and OpenAI. A TIME investigation, reported by The Star in January 2023, found Sama's Kenyan staff labelling toxic content for OpenAI took home about $1.32 to $2 an hour.
- The Meta moderators case. 187 former Sama moderators are seeking $1.6 billion over their dismissal, and Kenya's Court of Appeal ruled in September 2024 that Meta can be sued in Kenya (TechCabal).
- The Data Labelers Association. Launched in February 2025, it signed up 339 members in its first week, citing tiny per-task pay and no contracts (Computer Weekly).
- Remotasks leaves Kenya. Kenyan workers were cut off on March 7, 2024, per Rest of World, with an email citing an effective date of March 8 (Citizen Digital; Business Daily). Nigeria and Pakistan went the same month.
The lesson: a platform can leave Kenya overnight. Never rely on one.
Which AI training platforms accept Kenyans in 2026?
Here is the blunt version. Shilling figures use the rate of KES 129.85 to the dollar on October 21, 2026 (Trading Economics).
- Outlier. Accepts Kenya?: No; Notes: Kenya is missing from Outlier's July 2026 list of permitted countries
- Mercor. Accepts Kenya?: No; Notes: Supported-countries page lists Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Rwanda, but not Kenya
- Remotasks (Scale AI). Accepts Kenya?: No; Notes: Cut off Kenya in March 2024
- DataAnnotation. Accepts Kenya?: Unlikely (general English track); Typical pay (USD / KES per hour): From $25–$50 general; $25–$40 multilingual (KES 3,246–6,493); Payout method: PayPal; Notes: No official list; applicant reports say general track is limited to six English-speaking countries
- Meridial (Invisible). Accepts Kenya?: "World Wide" listing; Typical pay (USD / KES per hour): Swahili specialist: $6–$65 (KES 779–8,440); Payout method: Not stated; Notes: Rate set partly by location
- Alignerr. Accepts Kenya?: Not stated; Typical pay (USD / KES per hour): Listings from $25–30 up to $40–120 (KES 3,246–15,582); Payout method: Not stated on site; "paid weekly"; Notes: Apply via app.alignerr.com
- micro1. Accepts Kenya?: Yes, per a third-party check; Typical pay (USD / KES per hour): Varies by role; Payout method: Deel; Notes: Kenya is not on micro1's excluded list, per Paybill KE (Oct 2026)
- OpenTrain. Accepts Kenya?: Per posting; Typical pay (USD / KES per hour): Listings from $6–14 up to $120–150+ (KES 779–19,478+); Payout method: Not stated; Notes: 191 open roles shown for Kenya
- Mindrift (formerly Toloka). Accepts Kenya?: Says "any country"; check its eligibility page; Typical pay (USD / KES per hour): $5–15 for video recording tasks; specialised projects pay more; Payout method: Payoneer or PayPal (via Tipalti); Notes: Twice-monthly payouts on the 5th and 20th
- Tamborin AI. Accepts Kenya?: Yes; Typical pay (USD / KES per hour): $20–$100 (KES 2,597–12,985); Payout method: USD, paid every Friday; Notes: Swahili, Yoruba and Arabic rating at $45/hr
Outlier Kenya: closed, for now
Outlier's Flexible Working Guidelines, effective July 15, 2026, list the countries you may work from. Tanzania, South Africa and Egypt are in. Kenya is not. Anyone offering an Outlier account for Kenya via VPN or a borrowed ID is selling you a deactivation. If you are in a supported country, read whether Outlier AI is legit, with real worker reviews.
Mercor and Remotasks Kenya: also closed
Mercor's supported-countries page names twenty African countries. Kenya is not one of them. Remotasks is gone.
DataAnnotation and Alignerr: open door, unclear rules
DataAnnotation states rates "starting at $25-$50 per hour" in its FAQ and pays via PayPal, but publishes no country list. Applicant reports compiled by AItrainer.work say the general English track only takes the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland, while bilingual tracks reach further. A Kenyan applicant's realistic shot is the Swahili assessment. Alignerr lists roles from $25 to $120 an hour, paid weekly, and names no eligible countries.
micro1, OpenTrain and Mindrift: worth your time
micro1 pays contractors through Deel. A Kenyan guide that checked micro1's excluded-country list on October 16, 2026 found Kenya was not on it. Confirm during signup.
OpenTrain's Kenya page showed 191 open roles, from $7-an-hour image QA to dental experts at $80 to $285, but eligibility is set per posting. Read every listing.
Toloka's annotator work has moved to Mindrift, which says you can join from any country and pays via Payoneer or PayPal twice a month.
How much do AI training jobs in Kenya pay?
From the listings above: entry tasks like video recording pay about $5 to $15 an hour (KES 650 to 1,950). Chatbot evaluation pays $20 to $50 (KES 2,600 to 6,500). Language specialists earn $25 to $45. Lawyers, clinicians and coders see $50 to $150.
Compare that with the $1.32 to $2 an hour Sama staff reportedly earned. Build a specialist profile, and remember that flexibility means no guaranteed work: on any single platform, income can drop to zero next month.
Swahili AI jobs: your language is worth money
This is the part most Kenyans undersell. AI labs need models that understand Swahili, Sheng, Kikuyu and Luo, and few people can rate model output in those languages to a professional standard.
On Tamborin AI, our Swahili, Yoruba and Arabic rating projects pay $45 an hour, about KES 5,843 at today's rate. Elsewhere, Meridial's Swahili Language Specialist listing quotes $6 to $65, adjusted partly for location. Be specific on every profile: "native Swahili, coastal dialect, can judge formal vs. conversational register" beats "fluent in Swahili."
A Swahili-speaking clinical officer or advocate is rarer still: our clinical and contract reasoning projects pay $95 to $100 an hour.
Want paid AI training work that is open to Kenya? Apply to Tamborin AI. No minimum hours, no AI experience needed, paid every Friday.
How to get paid: PayPal to M-Pesa, Payoneer and Wise
How to withdraw PayPal to M-Pesa
Since July 2025, PayPal withdrawals sit inside the M-PESA app itself, TechCabal reported. The old PayPal Mobile Money website was discontinued on August 16, 2025, according to The Kenya Times. The steps:
- Update the M-PESA app and log in.
- Find PayPal under the finance or global payments section.
- Log in to PayPal and link the two accounts.
- Enter the amount, check the fee and exchange rate shown, and confirm.
Money usually lands within hours. M-PESA caps transactions at KES 250,000; Equity Bank handles PayPal withdrawals up to $10,000.
Watch the conversion. Kenyan guide Mctaba estimates PayPal's rate runs 2.5% to 4% worse than mid-market. On a $500 payout, that is KES 1,600 to 2,600 gone.
Payoneer and Wise
Payoneer matters because Mindrift and many clients pay through it. Mctaba puts its bank withdrawal fee at $1.50; check Payoneer's current fee page. Wise delivers shillings to Kenyan bank accounts, and its Kenya page says most transfers arrive within a day. Full comparison: Wise vs Payoneer vs mobile money in 2026.
Do you pay tax on online AI work in Kenya?
Short answer: assume yes. This is general information, not tax advice.
KRA's individual income tax page says every individual with a KRA PIN must file a return by June 30 each year, even a nil return. The bands start at 10% on the first KES 288,000 a year, rising to 35% above KES 9.6 million, with personal relief of KES 28,800 a year for residents.
The 5% withholding tax in the news targets content monetisation such as YouTube income; Google asked Kenyan creators to verify KRA PINs by October 1, 2026 (Capital FM via AllAfrica). AI training contracts are a different category, so ask a tax adviser how to declare yours, and keep every payout record.
Scams to avoid
- Anyone selling "verified" Outlier, Remotasks or Mercor accounts. They get frozen, often with your earnings inside.
- Any "registration fee." Mercor says it never asks talent for payment (Paybill KE); no legitimate platform does.
- WhatsApp or Telegram recruiters without an official company email.
- Requests to use your M-PESA line to "receive client payments." That exposure lands on you.
A step-by-step plan for your first month
- Write a one-page skills profile: profession, languages with dialects, and writing or coding you can prove.
- Apply where Kenya is open in week one: Tamborin AI, micro1, Alignerr, Meridial's Swahili role and relevant OpenTrain postings.
- Treat every assessment like a job interview. Most rejections come from rushing the guidelines.
- Set up PayPal and Payoneer in your legal name, matching your ID.
- Sort power and data. See our guide to power cuts, data caps and a home office setup.
- Track hours and pay per platform, for your own rate and for KRA.

FAQ
Does Outlier AI work in Kenya?
No. Outlier's Flexible Working Guidelines, effective July 15, 2026, list the countries contributors may work from, and Kenya is not on the list, though neighbouring Tanzania is. Using a VPN or someone else's ID breaks Outlier's terms and risks losing your account and unpaid earnings. The list does change, so recheck it.
Is Remotasks still available in Kenya?
No. Rest of World reported that Kenyan workers were cut off on March 7, 2024, and users received an email citing March 8 as the effective date. Business Daily confirmed the exit on March 13, 2024. Nigeria and Pakistan lost access the same month. Treat anyone offering Kenyan Remotasks accounts today as a scammer.
How much can I earn from AI training jobs in Kenya?
It depends on your skills. Simple recording or image QA tasks list at $5 to $15 an hour. Alignerr's roles start at $25. Language rating on Tamborin AI pays $45, about KES 5,843. Specialists in law, medicine or code can earn $80 to $150 an hour. Work volume is never guaranteed.
How do I withdraw PayPal to M-Pesa?
Open the updated M-PESA app, find PayPal under the finance or global payments menu, log in to PayPal and link the accounts, then enter the amount and confirm after checking the fee and rate. The old PayPal Mobile Money website closed on August 16, 2025. Transactions are capped at KES 250,000 each.
Are there Swahili AI jobs?
Yes. AI labs need native speakers to rate and correct model output in Swahili and other African languages. Tamborin AI runs Swahili, Yoruba and Arabic rating projects at $45 an hour. Describe your dialect and register skills precisely on every application, because that detail is what gets you matched to language projects.
Do I need experience to get AI training work?
No AI experience is needed for most entry roles. You do need strong written English, attention to detail and patience with long guidelines. Professional qualifications raise your rate sharply. Tamborin AI, for example, requires no AI background and pays every Friday.
Your next step: open Tamborin AI, pick the project closest to your profession or language, and apply today. Then browse Tamborin jobs while you wait.
