Most guides to AI training jobs in Nigeria still open with Outlier. That advice expired on 15 July 2026, when Outlier's Flexible Working Guidelines came into effect with a list of 117 countries contributors can work from. South Africa, Egypt and Tanzania are on it. Nigeria is not.

The work has not gone away. It has moved to platforms that still pay Nigerians in dollars. I have read thousands of Nigerian CVs over 15 years in recruitment, and the profiles getting $40 an hour and up are rarely "tech people". They are nurses, lawyers, accountants, teachers and Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa speakers who write well.

Here is who is hiring, what it pays in naira, how the money lands, and how to apply without getting scammed.

Which AI training platforms accept Nigerians in 2026?

I checked each platform's eligibility or help pages in October 2026. Where a platform publishes no country list, I name the source I relied on.

  • Tamborin AI. Accepts Nigeria?: Yes; Typical pay (USD): $20 to $100/hr; Payout method: Paid every Friday; Notes: Yoruba, Swahili and Arabic rating at $45/hr; no AI experience needed
  • Mercor. Accepts Nigeria?: Yes, on its supported list; Typical pay (USD): Varies by listing; Payout method: Stripe Connect, weekly; Notes: Converted to naira at payout; 7-day hold on first payout
  • micro1. Accepts Nigeria?: Yes, per Raenest's October 2026 review; Typical pay (USD): $15 to $50+/hr reported; Payout method: Deel, twice a month; Notes: No public country list
  • Mindrift (now includes Toloka). Accepts Nigeria?: Yes, per Raenest; Typical pay (USD): $30 to $90/hr stated by Mindrift; Payout method: Payoneer or Tipalti (bank/PayPal), twice a month; Notes: Specialist projects need qualification tests
  • CrowdGen by Appen. Accepts Nigeria?: Yes, per Raenest; Typical pay (USD): $3 to $15/hr reported by Nigerians; Payout method: Payoneer, PayPal, Airtm, bank transfer; Notes: Entry-level; payments can be slow
  • Alignerr. Accepts Nigeria?: Unclear, set per project; Typical pay (USD): $15 to $30/hr general, $50 to $100+ specialist; Payout method: Stripe or PayPal, by country; Notes: Onboarding does not guarantee work
  • OpenTrain AI. Accepts Nigeria?: Varies by role; Typical pay (USD): $6/hr to $285/hr across listings; Payout method: Not stated on listings page; Notes: 195 roles listed as open in Nigeria
  • Outlier. Accepts Nigeria?: No; Notes: Not on the 15 July 2026 country list; VPNs banned
  • DataAnnotation. Accepts Nigeria?: No, per third-party reviews; Payout method: PayPal only; Notes: Reportedly US, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, NZ
  • Remotasks. Accepts Nigeria?: No; Notes: Shut down in Nigeria in 2024

The platforms that closed the door

Outlier AI Nigeria status: closed. The guidelines say "the use of VPNs to mask your presence in a restricted country is not permitted." Do not try. A VPN login is the fastest way to lose an account along with any unpaid balance. More in is Outlier AI legit in Nigeria.

DataAnnotation pays through PayPal and its FAQ lists rates starting at $25 to $50 an hour. A September 2026 review by AI Training Jobs Finder says it only accepts six countries, Nigeria not among them, and calls this "a hard requirement tied to payment processing." DataAnnotation does not publish the list itself, so treat that as reported, not official.

Remotasks, Scale AI's older platform, shut down in Kenya, Nigeria and Pakistan in early 2024, as Rest of World reported.

The platforms that still want you

Mercor is the clearest yes. Its supported countries page lists Nigeria. Mercor pays hourly contractors every Wednesday through Stripe Connect into your own bank account, with a 7-day hold on the first payout, per its payments guide. One detail people miss: Mercor says contractors outside the US cannot receive USD payouts, so Stripe converts your pay to naira on the way in.

Mindrift now absorbs Toloka. Its help centre carries a notice titled "Toloka is joining Mindrift." Mindrift's own August 2026 post puts rates at about $30 an hour on general projects up to $90 on specialist technical ones, paid per task.

micro1 and CrowdGen both accept Nigerians according to Raenest's October 2026 roundup. Raenest sells USD accounts, so it is an interested source.

OpenTrain AI shows 195 roles open in Nigeria, from $6 to $14 an hour fertility data annotation to $80 to $285 an hour for dental experts. The page itself warns that eligibility "can vary between roles", so read every listing.

What AI training jobs in Nigeria pay in naira

The Central Bank's official NFEM rate closed at ₦1,332.47 to the dollar on 13 October 2026, according to Techeconomy's daily tracker. Rates move every day, and what you actually receive depends on your payout provider's conversion rate. Using ₦1,332 as a round figure:

  • $15 (CrowdGen top end). Naira per hour: ₦19,980; 10 hrs a week, 4 weeks: ₦799,200
  • $45 (Tamborin AI Yoruba rating). Naira per hour: ₦59,940; 10 hrs a week, 4 weeks: ₦2,397,600
  • $100 (specialist law or code review). Naira per hour: ₦133,200; 10 hrs a week, 4 weeks: ₦5,328,000

That is why I tell Yoruba speakers in Ibadan and Abeokuta to stop treating their language as a soft skill.

Be realistic about hours. Techpoint Africa's 30-day Outlier review found "occasional drought seasons" with no tasks at all. Budget on half the hours you hope for.

How Tamborin AI fits in

Tamborin AI runs paid AI training projects open to people in Nigeria, at $20 to $100 an hour, with no minimum hours and payment every Friday. You do not need AI experience. Current examples on the site include everyday writing evaluation at $32 an hour (open to all), clinical reasoning review at $95, common-law and contract reasoning at $100, financial analysis checks at $80, and Swahili, Yoruba and Arabic rating at $45.

If you read and write Yoruba fluently, start there. If you are called to the Nigerian Bar, the common-law work fits you better than generic chatbot rating.

How to receive dollars in Nigeria from AI training work

Set this up before your first task.

PayPal. For two decades Nigerian PayPal accounts could send but not receive. In January 2026 PayPal and Paga announced that Nigerians can link PayPal to a Paga wallet and receive from over 200 countries, reported by Daba Finance. In March 2026 Techeconomy still called that route early and "not yet reliable for regular payouts", and users have reported sudden account restrictions. Do not make PayPal your only option.

Payoneer. Used by CrowdGen and Mindrift. Techeconomy lists a $4 fee on USD bank transfers under $400, a conversion markup of up to 3.5%, and a $29.95 annual fee if you receive under $2,000 in 12 months.

Grey. Gives you US account details. Techeconomy lists a 0.8% ACH deposit fee (minimum $2), 1% conversion and ₦35 per local naira withdrawal.

Raenest (formerly Geegpay). The Geegpay brand merged into Raenest in 2025, confirmed by TechCabal. Techeconomy reports four free deposits a month and no naira withdrawal fee, though that offer was described as a limited-time campaign.

Wise. Useful for receiving naira transfers, but the Wise card is not available to Nigerian residents, per The Currency Shop.

Deel is how micro1 pays, per Deel's case study, and Mercor uses Stripe. Both need a bank account in your own name.

Power, data and a backup plan

A power cut in the middle of a timed assessment can cost you the attempt. Before you apply, get a laptop battery that lasts three hours and a second mobile network on a MiFi or spare phone. Our guide to power cuts, data caps and a home office setup covers costs.

Do you pay tax on AI training income in Nigeria?

Probably, if you earn real money. The Nigeria Tax Act took effect on 1 January 2026. TechCabal reports that a Nigerian resident's income is taxable "wherever they arise", which includes dollars from foreign platforms, and that foreign clients cannot withhold Nigerian tax, so you self-assess. BellaNaija's summary says annual income of ₦800,000 or less is exempt. Ten hours a week at $45 passes that in under two weeks. Keep records of every payout. This is general information, not tax advice; speak to a Nigerian tax professional.

Scams to avoid

Real AI training platforms never charge you to join. Africa Check warns that legitimate jobs do not require "processing" or "activation" fees. Walk away from:

  • WhatsApp or Telegram "recruiters" who promise Outlier or DataAnnotation access for a fee. Outlier does not accept Nigeria at all now.
  • Sellers of "verified accounts". Using someone else's identity breaks every platform's terms and you will not get paid.
  • Anyone asking for your BVN, card PIN or OTP. No platform needs these.

How to apply: a step-by-step plan

  1. Pick your lane. List your degree, profession and every language you write fluently. Specialist and language work pays most.
  2. Set up two payout routes before you apply: a Nigerian bank account in your own name (for Mercor's Stripe payouts and Deel) and one of Payoneer, Grey or Raenest.
  3. Apply to three platforms, not ten. Start with Tamborin AI, Mercor and Mindrift. Use the same name on every account as on your ID.
  4. Treat the assessment like an exam. Read the guidelines twice; most failures I see come from skimming.
  5. Track hours and payouts in a spreadsheet from day one, for tax and for disputes.
  6. Read the complete guide to getting paid to train AI from Africa, and send Nairobi friends our Kenya guide.

FAQ

Can Nigerians still work on Outlier AI?

No. Outlier's Flexible Working Guidelines, effective 15 July 2026, list the countries contributors can work from, and Nigeria is not on the list. The same page bans VPNs used to hide your location. Outlier has not said publicly what happens to Nigerian accounts opened before that date, so do not count on one. Mercor, Mindrift, micro1 and Tamborin AI still accept Nigerian applicants.

What is the best AI training job in Nigeria for beginners?

Start with work that needs no specialist degree: everyday writing evaluation on Tamborin AI ($32 an hour, open to all), Mindrift's general projects, or CrowdGen if you just want practice. Language rating pays more if you are fluent in Yoruba. Avoid any "beginner course" that charges a fee to get you onto a platform.

How do I receive dollars in Nigeria from AI training platforms?

It depends on the platform. Mercor pays through Stripe into a Nigerian bank account, converted to naira. micro1 uses Deel. Mindrift and CrowdGen support Payoneer. Grey and Raenest give you US account details for platforms that pay by ACH. PayPal can now receive via Paga, but treat it as a backup.

Are data annotation jobs in Nigeria legit?

Many are, but scams copy their names. A legitimate platform has a public website, free sign-up, a written contract or terms, and pays through a named provider such as Stripe, Deel or Payoneer. If someone contacts you on WhatsApp, charges a fee, or asks for your BVN or OTP, it is not a real job.

How much can I earn from AI training in Nigeria per month?

It varies with hours and specialism. At ₦1,332 to the dollar, ten hours a week at $15 is about ₦800,000 a month, and at $45 about ₦2.4 million. Task supply is uneven on every platform, so budget on half your target hours and keep your main income until the work is steady.

Your next step: open Tamborin AI, pick the one project that matches your language or profession, and finish the application today while your power is on.
