AI companies need people to write, review and rate the examples their models learn from. Some of that work needs specialists, such as doctors, lawyers, engineers and translators, and some is open to anyone who writes clearly. Tamborin AI lists these projects, with pay from around $20 to $100 an hour depending on the skill.
It can be good side income. It can also be frustrating if you go in expecting a steady salary. This is what the first month usually looks like.
Week 1: applications and assessments
Most projects start with an application and a short assessment. Expect to:
- Fill in your background and the domains you know well.
- Complete a test task, often unpaid, that checks your writing, reasoning or subject knowledge.
- Wait a few days to a couple of weeks for a decision.
Apply to several projects that genuinely match your skills rather than every project listed. Specialist projects pay more and usually have fewer applicants.
Weeks 2 and 3: onboarding and your first paid tasks
Once accepted, you will read project guidelines. Read them properly. Guidelines are long, detailed and change often, and most early rejections of work come from missing a rule.
Your first tasks are usually reviewed closely. Quality scores in your first weeks often decide whether you are offered more work, so go slowly at first. Accuracy matters more than speed.
What you can earn
Pay depends on the project's rate, the hours available and your quality score. A few honest points:
- Hours are not guaranteed. Some weeks a project has more work than people; other weeks it has none.
- Rates vary by skill. General writing evaluation pays less than code review or clinical reasoning.
- Time spent learning guidelines is often unpaid. Factor it into what month one is really worth.
A reasonable way to plan is to treat your first month as an investment, and decide after month two whether the hours and rate work for you.
When the money lands
Tamborin AI pays weekly, on Fridays, to your chosen payout method: a local bank account, Wise or Payoneer, or mobile money where available. Set up and verify your payout method before you start working, so your first payment is not held up. Our getting paid guide explains the options.
You are an independent contractor for this work, so keep your own records of what you earned each month for tax.
Doing it alongside a job or job search
AI training fits well around other work because there are usually no minimum hours. A few habits help:
- Block regular times in your week, rather than working whenever tasks appear.
- Keep it within your current employer's rules on outside work. Check your contract.
- Never use confidential information from your day job in a task.
Is it worth it?
For many people it is a useful bridge: income while job hunting, savings for a better laptop or backup power, or a way to use specialist knowledge flexibly. It works best when you treat it as variable side income rather than a salary.
